Community Spotlight: Korie Mathis

Meet Korie Mathis (She/Her), embracing her lifelong affinity for sports and physicality. After the pandemic halted her collegiate basketball journey, Korie founded Mac Motivated, a platform dedicated to helping others discover motivation, confidence, and accessible fitness solutions to achieve their goals.

Tell us about yourself, who is Korie?

My name is Korie Mathis (She/Her) I am originally from Atlanta, GA - and I have always had a passion for being active and staying physical. For the majority of my life I have participated in multiple sports (volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, even football) and of course, as much as I loved the sports I played, the confidence I built for myself through sports and engaging in activities is what I began to strive for.

Coming out of high school, I was given the opportunity to play basketball for a collegiate university on scholarship for my next 4 years. During my sophomore year in college, COVID hit - and it all took a turn. Lock down had us inside, unable to play, train, or be active like I was used to - and I lost motivation, drive, and confidence. I realized I was lacking self determination on my own without my coach and I was tired of letting myself go, and feeling stuck where I was, which is why I started my business, Mac Motivated. Created to helping others find what motivates them, as well as providing accessible and efficient training methods for developing self-confidence, regardless of their circumstances. Everyones situation is different, Mac Motivated is there to give you that push and guidance to your goals throughout their fitness and health journey.

When do you feel like your most authentic self?
The gym has become my happy place. For many reasons, but the main reason being, I can let go. Its a environment for me where I have developed my strength, confidence, and discipline. As well, I don't hide who I am for anybody while Im there, I can be that outgoing extrovert with all this bundled up energy, while still remaining in my own safe space, regardless of the gym I'm in. Especially when it comes to training my clients, it gives me the best feeling when guiding them.

Existing as a queer person in the US is becoming increasingly more difficult. How do you remain positive in today's climate?
I remain confident by embracing and being active with the community I have created through Mac Motivated. With the majority of my demographic being individuals apart of the LGBTQ+ community, I always love to remain in touch or available as often as I can in order to keep maintain a strong relationship with my community. Its so much easier to be positive, and not feel like your alone with the challenges that we face. Which is why I love the community that I receive so much support everyday.

What is most important to you when shopping for clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident?
Personally the most important objective for me when it comes to shopping for clothing is the fit of my pieces. As androgynous lesbian, I usually prefer looser/flow fitting tops and pants that make me feel comfortable and relaxed. I love softer materials, and pieces that are able to show off my muscle tone, while also providing comfy feel.

What are your favorite products from Humankind?
My favorite products from humankind are is the black tech tank, and the anywhere short! They are the absolute best in regards to fit, material, and quality. I have literally worn the set to the gym, while out, and have even used the shorts and tank separately, and they have been the best for being so interchangeable with multiple styles.
